Steel Structure Cost in the UAE: 9 Factors That Decide Your Quotation
What drives the price of a steel building in the UAE, and how to compare fabrication quotations fairly.

“How much does a steel structure cost?” is the first question almost every client in the UAE asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on a handful of factors you can control. Two buildings with the same floor area can differ widely in price because of span, loads, finishes and site conditions. This guide explains what actually drives a structural steel quotation in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Northern Emirates, so you can compare offers fairly and avoid surprises later.
How steel structure quotations are built
A fabricator’s price is not a single number per square metre. It is built from the steel itself, the work done to it, and what happens on site:
- Steel tonnage – the weight of beams, columns, rafters, purlins, bracing and plates, taken from the design drawings.
- Fabrication – cutting, drilling, fitting, welding and inspection hours in the workshop.
- Surface protection – blasting, primer, paint system or hot-dip galvanizing.
- Transport and erection – trucks, cranes, manlifts, crew days and site access.
- Engineering – shop drawings, connection design and approvals.
9 factors that decide the price
1. Span and height
Clear spans without internal columns need deeper rafters and heavier frames. A 30 m clear-span warehouse uses noticeably more steel per square metre than a 15 m span with a middle column line. If your operation can live with a column, ask for both options.
2. Loads the structure must carry
Mezzanine floors, overhead cranes, rooftop equipment, solar panels and wind exposure all add steel. Crane girders and monorails in particular need heavier sections and tighter tolerances. Share your equipment list early; it changes the design.
3. Design standard and consultant requirements
Most projects in the UAE are designed to AISC 360 or Eurocode 3, with local authority requirements on top. The consultant’s specification decides connection types, weld inspection levels and documentation, all of which affect cost. Read more in our guide to UAE structural steel codes.
4. Connection type
Bolted connections are faster to erect; fully welded connections can reduce section sizes but add site welding and inspection. Your fabricator should propose the most economical mix for your programme.
5. Corrosion protection
A simple primer and enamel system costs less than a multi-coat industrial system or hot-dip galvanizing, but coastal and industrial sites in the UAE are harsh. Choosing the wrong system is the most expensive “saving” you can make. See corrosion protection for coastal UAE projects.
6. Fire protection
If the authority requires fire-rated steel, intumescent paint or boards are added after erection. This can be a significant line item, so confirm the required rating before tendering.
7. Cladding and roofing
Sandwich panels, single-skin sheets, skylights, gutters and flashing are often quoted separately from the steel frame. Check whether your offers include them.
8. Site access and erection
Crane size, working at height, night work, permits and how close trucks can get all change the erection cost. A site in Musaffah, ICAD or KEZAD with open access is simpler than a tight urban plot.
9. Programme
Fast-track jobs need overtime and parallel crews. Giving the fabricator realistic time for shop drawings and approvals keeps the price down. Our article on fabrication lead times explains a typical sequence.
How to compare quotations fairly
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the steel tonnage stated? | Lets you see whether two offers are pricing the same design. |
| Which paint or galvanizing system? | A cheaper coating can fail within a few UAE summers. |
| Are shop drawings included? | Without them, fabrication cannot start and delays follow. |
| Is erection included, with cranes? | Supply-only and supply-and-install prices are not comparable. |
| What is excluded? | Foundations, anchor bolts, cladding and fire protection are common exclusions. |
Ways to reduce cost without cutting quality
- Fix the layout and loads before asking for prices: redesigns are the biggest cost driver.
- Use repeated bay sizes and standard sections so cutting and welding can be streamlined.
- Choose bolted site connections where possible.
- Match the coating to the real environment rather than the cheapest option.
- Bring the fabricator in early so the design suits workshop methods.
Frequently asked questions
Can you give a price per square metre?
Only as a rough budget. A reliable figure comes from the drawings, because span, loads and finishes change the steel weight. Send us your drawings or a sketch with dimensions and we will give you a realistic estimate.
Is galvanizing worth it in the UAE?
For exposed steel near the coast or in industrial areas it usually is, because it greatly reduces maintenance. For internal steel in a dry building, a good paint system is often enough.
Do you also install the steel?
Yes. Al Saqr Al Ahmar fabricates in our Musaffah Industrial 44 workshop and erects on site with our own team. See our steel structures service.
