DNV-Rated Storage Containers and Tanks: What "DNV Onshore & Offshore" Actually Means

Fuel tanks, cement silos, skips, tube tanks and DNV-rated containers explained — what the DNV standard covers and why it matters for oil & gas operators.

If you work in oil & gas, you’ve seen “DNV-rated” on a spec sheet before — but it’s worth being precise about what that actually requires from a fabricator, especially when you’re sourcing tanks, skips, baskets or containers for offshore or safety-critical use.

What DNV covers

DNV (Det Norske Veritas) standards for offshore containers and lifting equipment set out design, materials, testing and certification requirements specifically for equipment that will be lifted, transported offshore, or used in environments where a structural failure has serious safety consequences. This is a different — and stricter — bar than standard structural fabrication.

What typically falls under this scope

  • Fuel tanks & cement silos — for site-based storage and batching operations
  • Skips & tube tanks — for offshore transport and containment
  • Water foundation facilities — structural tankage tied to foundation and ballast systems
  • DNV baskets & skids — for offshore lifting and equipment transport

Why this isn’t a scope to shop purely on price

A DNV-rated container that fails inspection — or worse, fails in service — costs far more in downtime and re-certification than the difference in fabrication cost would ever have saved. Ask any prospective fabricator directly: can you show certified test documentation for DNV-rated units you’ve delivered, and are your quality processes ISO 9001 certified end to end?

Where we’ve delivered this

Al Saqr Al Ahmar has fabricated DNV onshore & offshore storage and containment equipment as part of projects including the Ittihad Paper Mill, working within our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety management systems.
